Inhabitat's Week in Green: exciting green cars, plugless power and a candy robot (Engadget)
_Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green
developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green._
This week Inhabitat celebrated New Year's Eve and the start of 2012 with a
look at the biggest breaking green design stories from the past year. We
showcased the most exciting green cars to hit the streets in 2011, and we took
a look at the next-gen renewable energy technologies that are set to
supercharge our grid. We also brought you the year's most popular green
science stories, and we shared 7 futuristic wearable technology concepts. Last
but not least, we said farewell to the holiday season with a look at an
overachieving gingerbread house that transforms into a candy robot!
It was also an epic week for eco transportation news as China unveiled a brand
new blazing fast 310 MPH bullet train and Russia announced the construction of
the world's largest lithium-ion battery plant. We also watched M55 unveil a
line of ludicrous e-bikes blinged out with diamonds and gold, and we were
wowed by the Energy Return Wheel - an airless tire that utilizes springs to
smooth out ...

Give Your Children a Magical Christmas This Year by Delorus Quintal
When I was a kid, Christmas was something absolutely magical.
I remember the eager anticipation of Father Christmas to leave presents in my stockings on Christmas Eve. While we had all the family gifts under the tree, each of us also had a stocking hanging from the fireplace lintel. And somehow by the morning those we always full of small treats that simply must have come from Father Christmas himself!
It was all so exciting!
Yet there was also a bit of anxiety too. In Holland, where I grew up, there was a tradition that if you had been naughty, all you would get would be a lump of coal or a bag of salt instead of presents.
All of us kids would be secretly wondering and hoping for the best.
That bit of uncertainty added yet more magic and mystique to the whole event. It was not just a "given" that there would be heaps of presents on Christmas day - Santa really did check his list twice!
And isn't that how it should be? Christmas isn't supposed to be just one more hectic day where everyone just gets stressed and harassed. Don't you wish your children could experience the same wonder and magic that you remember from your own childhood?
So what happened?
Now, instead of Christmas carols sung by lamplight at our door by volunteers collecting for charity, we have tinny xmas jingles (yes, Christ has even been removed from Christmas and replaced by X, an unknown quantity).
Instead the commercials just scream buy, buy, buy, as though spending more and getting more will make the season special. But all that produces is stress and debt.
And then, when the big day comes, do we spend it peacefully and quietly, enjoying the family get together and traditions? Or is it a big scramble to open the gifts as rapidly as possible, only then, an hour later to be bored and harassed?
So, this year, why not bring some of that magic back? How about spending less money on presents, and spending more effort on making Christmas a lasting memory. Here are some ideas:
Look up your local papers to see what community events are on. Spend a bit less on presents and, instead, go and see a Christmas show together.
Go to a carols by candlelight service.
Drive around town together and look at the Christmas lights on people's houses. Have a vote between you all on which house is the best. Then finish off with some hot chocolate and a cinnamon bun.
Another idea is to do some Christmas baking together - perhaps making gingerbread men - or even a gingerbread house.
Go play in the snow - skating, sledding, snowballs and snow angels. Be a kid yourself, again, and have a belly laugh together. Ambitious? Try building an igloo together!
In the evenings, instead of turning on the TV, get out a board game, play charades, or work on a Jigsaw Puzzle together.
Watch a classic Christmas movie together. My favorites are Miracle on 34th Street, It's a Wonderful Life, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and the new Santa Clause series with Tim Allen.
Then, when Christmas finally arrives, take time to savor it. Instead of a mad scramble to open all the presents in the quickest time possible, how about taking them one at a time - handing them out to each member of the family so everyone can delight in them.

Above all, make it your goal, this year, to make Christmas a magical memory - a time that will draw you all closer together as a family, and that your children will remember for decades to come. Just as I still remember my Christmases in Holland, so many years ago.
